(Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, SEATO), система коллективной безопасности, учрежденная Договором о коллективной обороне Юго-Восточной Азии (Манильским пактом), подписанным в Маниле 8 сентября 1954 представителями Австралии, Франции, Новой Зеландии, Пакистана, Филиппин, Таиланда, Великобритании и США. Статья 4-я пакта предусматривала совместные действия в случае нападения на одну из сторон и консультации при иных, не связанных с вооруженным нападением. Договор был направлен на защиту его членов от внешней агрессии и внутренней подрывной деятельности.

СЕАТО была создана как тихоокеанский вариант Организации Североатлантического договора 1949 (НАТО). Руководящим органом СЕАТО был совет министров, куда входили министры иностранных дел или их заместители, собиравшийся раз в год. Постоянная штаб-квартира СЕАТО располагалась в Бангкоке (Таиланд).

К концу 1960-х годов эффективность СЕАТО существенно снизилась. Франция и Пакистан активно выступали против войны США во Вьетнаме. Великобритания начала вывод войск из Азии. Southeast Asia Treaty Organization

The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) was an international organization for collective defense in Southeast Asia created by the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty, or Manila Pact, signed in September 1954 in Manila, the Philippines. The formal institution of SEATO was established on 19 February 1955 at a meeting of treaty partners in Bangkok, Thailand. The organization's headquarters was also in Bangkok. Eight members joined the organization.

Primarily created to block further communist gains in Southeast Asia, SEATO is generally considered a failure because internal conflict and dispute hindered general use of the SEATO military; however, SEATO-funded cultural and educational programs left longstanding effects in Southeast Asia. SEATO was dissolved on 30 June 1977 after many members lost interest and withdrew.
